I just bought (yesterday I ordered it online) an Inspiron 600m and can't wait to get it. I have a question though, I am super confused about this whole wireless concept. I went ahead and bought a wireless router and the computer came with a wireless card, but am so confused as how I am gonna be able to use this thing. I was told (by someone) that all you needed was the card to be wireless and access the internet, but I bought the router because that is what Dell said you had to have in order to access the internet and be wireless.
I have a wired router at my house, my and my parents computers are hooked up to it. I am so confused too how I am gonna be able to set up this router....be able to access the internet......and also confused as too why I'm being told that I can't access the internet if I was at work unless they have a wireless router (even though my work is across the street). I guess I'm just compelety clueless here and would love to be told about this before I get my laptop.
Also we have Roadrunner........is there anywhere that when I get my router that I can stay with Roadrunner on my laptop like our desktops are?? If not what is the cheapest internet provider to go for wireless!?
Okay, let me make sure I understand you correctly.
When I get the wireless router I need to unplug the wired router that is now feeding two computer and set up my laptop, and 2 desktops to be wireless in order to keep Roadrunner on the 2 desktops and my laptop? I just wanna make sure I understand this right........because then I only need to try to convince my parents that it's okay to switch the wired router to the wireless router.
As far as trying the whole thing at work.....sounds good..so I guess I will just have to try. Sadly though I don't think it would work because the stupid router would have to be downstairs in the basement in order to get all computers hooked up to the wireless router.
The laptop will connect to the router by wireless. The current desktops will connect to the new router exactly like they connect to the old router. When you switch out the router, make sure you do a complete network reset. That is, turn off everything including the cable modem, attach the new router to the cable modem and to the two computers, then turn on the modem, wait about 5 minutes for the modem to synchronize with the network, turn on the router, then turn on the computers. Then follow the instructions that come with the new router to set up the wireless connection with your laptop.
Your wireless router will replace the current wired router that is now sharing the internet connection. The wireless router will have 4 wired ports and will broadcast a wireless signal that will allow the new laptop to connect to the internet in exactly the same way that it allows the wired computers to connect. Thus, you will not have to change your ISP. Again, just replace the current wired router with the wireless router.
If you want to access the internet from work across the street, this may or may not be possible. Wireless routers have a range, under ideal conditions of 200 to 300 feet. Ideal conditions means that there are no intervening walls, cielings, trees, cars, etc. between the router and the wireless card. Real world conditions can have all of these things, and thus whether or not your router will have a range that extends to your work, cannot be determined without trying it.
