Connectivity Problem
Last week I installed AVG anti-virus and firewall program on my desktop XPS Gen3. I already had the same software installed on my Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop and everything was fine. The two computers are conected via ethernet and a Belkin router. The desktop now has a connectivity problem. From the laptop I can't access shared folders on the desktop or the shared printer. I use a Mirra personal server and the dekstop can't access it but the laptop can. When I use the ping command from the desktop I echo back from the default gateway but not the local host IP address. However, if I ping the local host computer name it returns okay. I have tried several of the network diagnostic tools (ipconfig/nbtstat/netstat) as well as the network connectiions control panel. Everything looks like it should be working. I have uninstalled the AVG software and turned off the Windows XP Firewall (Win XP Pro SP2). Even doing this I cannot connect. By the way, the desktop connects via cable broadband to the internet and I am able to browse and receive email through Outlook. Has anyone experienced anything like this and does anyone have any suggestions of how I resolve the problem?
