How do I go wireless?

Hi everyone, my husband's laptop is an Inspiron 8000.  I am so clueless with this stuff but my question is this:  Is there a way I can go wireless with it?  For instance, not just in the house but say I travel with it, can I get online somewhere else without plugging that cable into a jack?

For instance, if I stop at a restaurant, can I bring my laptop in and just be on the internet?

Man I hope that made sense :smileysad:

More and more places are installing wireless Internet routers. Mostly this has been sort of limited to the larger cities. Some coffee shops, colleges. hotels, etc. have "hotspots" (the areas with routers). Some are free while others charge. You will need a wireless PC card or adapter for the computer (802.11g). You then only need to find such a hotspot.

What do you mean by:  802.11g

And can I get this wireless pc card at Best Buy?

Don't worry about the numbers 802.11, that just signifies the frequency the adapter works on. the letter g signifies the later models and the speed they work at. The g adapters are backward compatable so they will work with slower routers. We don't have a Best Buy store here but I have seen the adapters in Wal-Mart so they are readily available. The thing to look for is the adapter speed or performance vursus the cost. If you were planning to go wireless in your home you would have to set up a wireless networking router in your home.

One last question and then I'll quit bugging you, lol.

If I go wireless, I can bring my laptop with me when I travel, correct?  How would I connect to the internet at a hotel?  Do I have to have an AOL account ... or who would I dial up through or connect through.

    Hope I didnt confuse you.

You probably have more questions than I could answer in a week. Some words of wisdom: Free is not always free, most places would like you to be a customer. Remember that these hotspots are not secure so beware. You best need to plan ahead as to where to connect each day. Just driving around will usually not work. You can learn a lot by going to www.wififreespot.com and reading the "interesting FAQS".

    >>> If I go wireless, I can bring my laptop with me when I travel, correct?
Yes, if you are within range of an available access point (about 300 ft unobstructed). These access points are usually refered to as wireless routers and their service is available at many locations at a price (either by minute, hour or subscription) or at locations like public libraries for free (not all libraries have them however). Think of it as a standard radio station. If you are within range of that radio station, you can pick up it's broadcast on your radio.

    >>> How would I connect to the internet at a hotel?
Hotels that offer this service (not all do) will provide you the needed info on how to connect to their system. Just ask at the front desk or when setting up your reservations.

    >>> Do I have to have an AOL account ... or who would I dial up through or connect through.
My experience has been that the locatioin providing the wireless service already has an ISP (Internet Service Provider: AOL, MSN, Earthlink, etc.) and, therefore, doesn't require me to access my own. All access to the internet would go through the location's ISP.

    Does this help any?
