Intel 2915ABG with Latitude C610

I am using a Latitude C610 with an Intel 2915ABG wireless card and the Intel Provided Generic drivers on Windows 2000 Pro.  Is there a utility that will allow management of multiple wireless sites, or is this only supported in Windows XP?

    jimmyd998,

Under Win2K, client management is provided by the wireless card vendor, as there's no generic wireless support as in XP. Doesn't Intel provide one? I have a Truemobile 1150 mini-PCI card in my Win2K laptop, and the client manager that came with the device supports multiple wireless sites.

The card didn't ship with software.  I'm using the Intel Generic software, which doesn't provide managment for connecting to multiple sites.  Perhaps Intel will add this later, but probably not.

    jimmyd998,

    I wonder if Dell's

The link you provided was for the documentation, however I have downloaded the Dell driver set, and while it unpacks everything to its own directory as soon as it finds out the machine is a C610 it informs me that it won't work in this machine.

    jimmyd998,

Sheesh. Sorry about the link - I was about to fix it when I saw your post. People have "hacked" the installer information file (usually setup.ini) to get the installer to believe that the device can indeed be installed. Here's a thread describing getting a Truemobile 1300 installed on an Inspiron 8500. Maybe you can figure out what the parallel changes are for the 2915/C610.

Was this  <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>the link you'd found for the driver download? The notes describe a few fixes.

Yes that is the link.  I'll take a look at this and see what I can do with it.  I'll post a response later tonight or tomorrow, hopefully with a success story.

    Thank you.

    jimmyd998,

OK, good luck! It's irritating to have a working device that somebody's install software says can't work in the machine it's running on! :smileysad:

    jimmyd998,

Someone just posted this note about new drivers from Intel in the Inspiron network board. Perhaps this one's worth checking out!

I'm already using this version from Intel.  In order to switch from one WAP to another, it is a simple matter of typing in the appropriate SSID.  I was just hoping that similar to XP there was a verion for 2000 on the C610 that would figure out what WAP you were closest to and associate.

    jimmyd998,

In XP, the "autodiscovery" service is provided by the "wireless zero configuration" service. Win2K Service Pack 4 added a "wireless zero configuration" service. Here's a page illustrating its use. I've stayed with SP3 on my laptop, because there were quite a number of serious problems reported after SP4 became available. How completely it's implemented may well depend on the client manager and driver.
