Internet connection problem (IP settings not changing!)
Hi,
I have Dell INSPIRON E1505 laptop running on Windows Vista Home Premium.Till yesterday(Feb 11) my internet connection (cable as well as wireless) was working fine. Yesterday night I ran symantec updates (Norton Internet Security) and since today morning I have lost internet connectivity. I read somewhere that the personal firewall may affect your web browsing sometimes, so I disabled personal firewall on norton internet security. But of no use!
I called my internet service provider (COMCAST) to check if the problem is at their end, but No!
We checked by connecting modem to my laptop with & without router, but in both cases we found that when we ping ipconfig it showed the same number. Actually, different numbers should appear in the two scenarios (without router and with router).
We performed ipconfig/release in cmd and "The requested operation requires elevation" was the message appeared in cmd.
We performed ipconfig/renew in cmd and then following messaged was shown in cmd:
" Windows IP Configuration No operation data can be performed on Bluetooth Network while it has its media disconnected "
I don't know why it gave such wierd messages.
Please advice on how to resolve this issue(how to get new IP settings).
Thanks,
Kane ***Ichecked with my friend's laptop and it showed different IP settings (ipconfig) in the two scenarios discussed above (with router & without router) and it worked just fine meaning the my modem & router are perfectly fine.
Try using System Restore to go back to a point before the Norton Updates were installed. If this fixes the problem, I would give serious consideration to gettiing rid of all Symantec software (Norton) and getting something that has a better record of reliability.
I had symantec (Norton Internet security) running for whole 2007 and never had such problem in past. I just ran live updates and could it be the reason for internet nont working?
I will remove symantec and let you know the results, soon. Thanks,
Since we aren't really certain that the Norton Update is responsible for the problem, I'm hesitant to suggest uninstalling Norton to see if that fixes the problem. Sorry the simple solution of System Restore doesn't work. First let's try to troubleshoot this problem further. On the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.
