What action had you performed prior to the computer reboot, or did you initiate the reboot? Do you have any third party software firewalls installed?(Norton Internet Security, McAfee Security Suite, Trend Micro, etc.)
hum, well, try powering off everything including router and modem. wait a few minutes. Power on modem, router then pc. Boot up. check cable from pc to router. any lights show up on nic connection to pc? Does network adapter show up in device manager? and is there an X or exclamation mark next to it? IS the network adapter turned on in the bios?
Prior to the reboot I noticed that my Norton's Anti-virus was not working tried to restart it and couldn't so decided to reboot to make it load. That is why I did a reboot.
Have tried resetting the dsl and router did not work. Adapter does show up in device manager not x's or question marks.
The other computers in my house have no problem connectting to internet via their locaal connections.
I phsyically moved the computer to where my hubby's computer is connected and it still will not connect. Just kee[s saying that the local area connection is unplugged.
There are no lights lit up next to where the cable connects to back of computer.
No exactly the most computer literate person here, but I did do as some of the other posts said and pinged the 127.0.0.1 and it came back normal 4 packs sent and 4 received.
Norton's is okay it came back up when I rebooted, subscription is good for another 9 mths. Virus scan every Friday, last one on 6/29/2007.
I have been on the phone with Dell. They had me run a bunch of tests, then they restored to my computer to the original setup, which was stupid to me cause not only did I loose all my programs and data but it didn't even work.
I guess they are sending me a new modem, I hope that is what is really wrong with it. Will be without computer for 1-2 weeks.
Any suggestions while I wait as to what I might try.

Just noticed this from your earlier post...
Do you have the Intel PRO/100 VE network adapter installed on your 4600? If you do, then this may be the problem. You should have a steady amber light when the cable is connected with power on the computer, and an additional flashing green light as network/internet traffic is being xmitted/recvd.
Yes all computers connect to the linksys route thru cable
I have a Linksys router
Dell did a PC restore so good bye all files
Yes all the names are the same
Yes to Internet Protocol question
And yes I have the Intel Pro/100 VE adapter and there are no lights on the back that are visible.
I am at a loss. My hubby is on the way to Staples to get a USB Adapter that they claim I can use til my Dell Adapter gets here. Hope it works because this computer of his is a 1998 Gateway and slow as molasses.
Yes, the wireless USB adapter will do. Your ethernet adapter is the same as mine and is integrated into the motherboard.(Not replaceable unless you replace the motherboard) A little confused as to the exact name of the part that Dell is replacing?
You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the updated drivers for your network adapter? See if that works.
You state you own a DIM 4600, it has this network adapter driver:
