DSL or cable internet service comes to mind first.  Either of these services will let you use your phone line without interrupting your connection to the internet. 

Modem On Hold is supported by most 56K phone modems sold today.  You can check with any of a number of online vendors or check with local computer shops for pricing and availability.  Here are a few examples:

The problem is DSL or Cable is not available in my location. Only got phone service out here in 1968.

I tried one modem and my computor culled it. Would not install. Thought it must be a trick to it.

When installing a modem or other expansion card, it is best to uninstall the drivers for the old card before installing the new one.  Your Dimension 4100 probably had a Conexant or Aztech brand of modem.  To uninstall the driver for it, first remove the modem from the system.  Then, open Control Panel, and then Add/Remove programs.  You should find a listing for Conexant or Aztech modem.  Uninstall it from there.  If you do not have a listing for a modem in Add/Remove programs, restart your computer in Safe Mode, open Device Manager and remove all references to modems found there.  Also, open the category for Sound. Video and Game controllers and remove the reference to the "Half Duplex Wave Device..."  This is the voice portion of your modem.  If it is not removed as well, you will have difficulty installing the driver for your new modem.

After all references to all modems have been removed from your system, restart it without a modem in it to be sure that it does not try to install any modem drivers.  Then, shut down, install your new modem and install the new drivers according to the instructions that came with the new modem.
