When trying to access the net this morning found that my connection had died. I am now unable to get an IP address from my router through ipconfig /renew or the repair function of the Local Area Connection Status window.
When I attempt to renew my IP address ipconfig just waits for a while then reports a faiure. My computer has a Broadcom NtXtreme 57xx Ethernet adapter, connected through a router to my cable modem. I've tried changing the port I connect to on the router, the ethernet cable used and tried connecting directly to the cable modem. All failed. I've also updated the Ethernet Adapters driver to the most current one on the Broadcom support site.
I'm guessing that the Ethernet Adapter has gone kaput but am looking for any ideas of things to try before going out and buying a new Ethernet Adapter card.
Did you recycle your cable modem before connecting your network cable?
1) Remove all network cables from computer, router and modem.
2) Pull power plugs on router and cable modem. Wait 30 seconds minimum...
3) Plug in power cord on cable modem first. Wait till it completes it's POST checks (20-30 secs.)
4) Plug network cable from output of modem to input of computer directly( Bypass router). Try to get internet access. If it fails to get access, than your problem may be your modem. If you get access, than wire in your router and power it up.
5) If you lose internet access again after powering up your router, than the problem is in your router.
Have you compared the LAN properties and configurations between the two computers to see if they are similar?
There are 3 things I look for when one computer has network access and another does not:
1) Network LAN config and protocols between the two computers
2) Network name between two computers
3) If computer is wireless, is it commonly encrypted.
If your router has a web-based utility, which almost all have. Have you accessed it and tried to see if the computer you're trying to get internet access on is listed on the list of computers having access to the router?
If you've pursued these steps to no avail, than I would agree that you need a new ethernet card.

Thanks for the reply.
I've tried what you suggested but with no luck. But I don't think it's my router or my cable modem as I can connect through them with my second computer (the one I'm posting from) and am not having any problems with it. Also, I've tried using the port that my working computer is connected to on the router as well as the cable from that computer without any success. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again.
First power down everything and then connect the computer directly to the cable modem and if you can get on line you know the problem is with your router. If not then the NIC is suspect.
If it is the NIC try pinging the loopback address (127.0.0.1) and if you get a repsonse, then lets try running WinSockFix XP and repair the TCP/IP stack.
Hmm, not sure what did it but after leaving the computer off all afternoon everything was up an running smoothly last night. Maybe the broadcom chips had overheated by leaving it on for so long (I usually leave my computer on all the time). Thanks both for your help.
