split cable

I have road runner cable on my dimension running xp. I was just wondering if I could use a cable splitter and run the cable to another computer, so that both computer are connect to the cable.    Also, if I did this, could I only use one computer at a time to get on the internet?  Or do I need to invest in a router?  Thanks Carol

    carolbell,

You need a router.  It is designed precisely for this purpose - sharing a single IP address with multiple computers.  And as an added bonus it has a built in firewall to protect all those computers.  A wireless router runs about US$50 after rebates.  A wired only router is about US$10 less, if you can find one.  Get a major brand - Linksys, D-Link, Belkin or Netgear.

    I bought 3 D-Link DI-604 wired routers from buy.com recently.  $5 after rebate!
