Storms

Hello - I have a Dell XPS720 - WinXP Professional and wow, what a machine.

Unfortunately 2 nights ago lightening surge took out my network card. I had to have cable service come and reconfigure the cable service and found out the network card was also bad.

Purchased a new router - not wireless - (since it was also kaput) and a new Dynex 1 GB PCI Adapter. Opened my case and there's no place to install it. My motherboard evidentially has an intergrated network card.

My options now are to purchase a "refurbished" motherboard and pay someone to install it, or purchase a new PC. Of course I'm out of warranty.

Just wondering if a refurbished motherboard and installation are worth it. I have no experience with refurbished equipment but feel it would be a cheaper say to go especially since I hate the thought of just junking other perfectly good equipment on the PC.

By the way, the PC itself is fine... lightening only took out the internet part.

Thank you,

Cathy

    Cathy,

    :emotion-55:Just a thought:emotion-55:

The cost of a mtherboard can be very pricey.

I would have purchased a wireless router. I then would have purchased a USB Wireless adapter. Easy way to connect. Looks like a replacement computer is in your future.

Is it possible to install the Gigabit PCI Adapter in another free PCI slot and use that to connect to the router?

I saw another post that had the same type problem and their question was to use the Adapter in an empty PCI slot - or a USB connection. Since I need to use a wired router, I'm not able to use a wireless router, but I do have available PCI slots. I just wouldn't know which one to use.

Diagram in my XPS720 manual shows several PCI slots plus a couple of PCI Express slots, only one of which I use for the video card.

In looking at the Adapter, it looks as if there are 3 separate plug ins like: xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxx and the empty PCI ports are only xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  xxxxxx (black and white open slots). So I hesitate to just push the Adapter into one of them.

I'm not a PC tech but can follow directions, just want to make sure I'm not blowing anything up. So is this a possiblity?

    Thanks again,

    Cathy
