telnet

On my previous computer, I had telnet and it ran with a small menu with items like "connect" and "edit", "terminal" and "help". This allowed me to start and stop logging, ie to save info from the remote computer into a file.
The new computer, an XP does not have this menu.
I go to "Start" "Run" and then type in my telnet address. The box that opens does not contain a menu.
I dowloaded a  telnet product.  I didn't work. I  tried to use Hyperterminal, but they all get errors that say, " can't find connection" or "unable to connect" "cannot open a connection to" Telnet etc.
I tried the Earthlink Telnet  program I have that has a menu. None of them work.
I went to the control panel under "Folder Options" and redirected the URL Telnet protocol to go to the other Telnet program that I had from Earthlink. That did not work either.
Help.
I need to know why the other telnets won't connect or why the telnet that is Windows system 32 telnet does not have a menu.
help

    tess,

It sounds like the telnet client you were formerly using was quite a bit more "user-friendly" than Microsoft's. I've been using SecureCRT, an SSH and telnet client, and CRT, a telnet client, for the past eight years. Both are from VanDyke Software.

I highly recommend them both. Support from VanDyke has been consistently excellent. Take a look. I hope you'll be pleased.
