wireless cards and routers

Does anyone know if there are other wireless cards / adapters and broadband routers that are compatible with the Dell Inspiron 6000 other than the ones made by Dell?  I received the Linksys Wireless - G notebook adapter (model number WPC54G) and the LInksys Wireless - G Broadband router (model number WRT54G)  and I don't want to open them unless they will work with the Inspiron.  Thanks for any input

    The router is fine.  Set that up.  You should be able to return the notebook adapter.  The 6000 should have an internal wireless adapter already installed -- either the Intel 2200 B/G wireless adapter or the Intel 2915 A/B/G wireless adapter.  Either model is compatible with the Linksys router you mentioned.
     
    I personally use that model router with the 2200 B/G wireless adapter built into my 6000.  Chances are you have the same adapter.
     
    One hint for setting up the router.  Be sure you install the router using a hard-wired connection.  Doesn't matter whether it's your PC (usually easiest, since that's probably where your cable/dsl modem sits already) or your notebook with a physical connection between its ethernet port and the router.

    When setting up the router (modem) do you have to install the program on both the desktop and laptop? I am unable to get my laptop to work wirelessly.. I have an Inspiron 6000. Pro/Wireless 2915. It will show 'Wireless Networks Found', but then shows 'Not Connected' and am unable to connect to the internet.... Any ideas/help??

    You should be able to establish your network and internet connectivity using the software on only the hard-wired desktop.  Have you been able to set up the router and dsl/cable modem to successfully connect to the internet through your desktop system yet?

    Desktop works fine. (laptop works hooked up to the modem with ethernet too) but I am unable to connect to the internet wirelessly on the laptop.... It does it for a second, but then I am unable to navagate online..

    Have you successfully connected to a wireless network anywhere?
     
    Do you have wireless security (WEP, WPA, MAC filtering, etc.) enabled on your router?
