wireless connection works, browser doesn't

- Set up DSL at one computer with WIN98 a couple of weeks ago, had some issues with malware and hijack programs, believe fixed with Spybot and System Mechanic

- Wireless connection to Inspiron 8100 laptop worked also, although frequent disconnection was an issue

- Now, wireless connection establishes, but browser says I have no internet connection

- reloaded DSL software on computer one, reloaded on laptop, reloaded wireless driver on laptop, tweaked and tweaked network settings, read everything twice, BIOS of laptop updated weeks before troubles began, Windows updates current!

-I have run Spybot and Sytem Mechanic on laptop, but only after troubles began, so I don't believe I have removed any essentials unintentionally

Inspiron 8100 running XP Pro, Intel Pentium III Mobile 1000Mhz, 512M RAM,

D-Link DWL-650 wireless card, Actiontec DSL Gateway

Browsers used are IE 6 and Opera 7.5

Anyone have an idea as to what switch is turned off?  Thanks for your response!

Can you ping your router??....what about websites??......if the answer is yes, enter the ip address of the website into your browser address bar and see if you can access the website....if you can using the ip address, then there may be a dns problem either with your system or ISP.... go to start, run, type in cmd and click ok to access the command promt screen....at the dos promt, type "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the quotes) and reboot your system.... if you still cannot access web page, go to tools at the top of IE, select internet options, connections tab, LAN settings button at the bottom of page and make sure the proxy settings are not checked and 'automatically detect settings' is checked....

I had a similar problem and solved by using the network card utility to setup instead of Windows utility. Look at your network connection "satus". I could send packets but not receive packets. (send had a number that incremented while receive was 0). I use a Dlink router so maybe Dlink and windows are not on the same page. I have an Intel 2200BG card in my I8600 and once I setup wireless with the Intel utility all worked fine. Might be worth a try

Solved the problem, and it was my own fault, had the incorrect WEP network key saved on the laptop. Apparently there is no message that the key is incorrect and the wireless card connects, but the browser tells you you have no internet connection. Thanks for your help.

    Hi all

I have the same problem described in the original post, but:

My wireless access point is not using WEP

Other computers (1 other dell inspiron and on compaq) connect to the 'net just fine

My ethernet doesn't work either (unplugging wireless access point and hooking my laptop directly in to dsl modem)

The setup: Inspiron 8100, windows XP, linksys wireless card (WPC11 v. 4) and the access point is also a Linsys router (BEFW11s4).

Having trouble installing the wireless adapter card setup utility, install manual says the linksys config util is not meant for XP

Please help...can get the I8200 to work but not my fave I8100!

    Thank you

in the first posting, you said that your computer had a working connection, but people got hold of it, and your browser stopped reading a working connection.  also, you said you had xp pro, a p3 mobile, and 512 mb of ram.  i have the same issues, and i think i have narrowed it down to two missing files.  the files it is reading as missing are:  .iecont.dll and iecontlc.dll.  plus, recently, i had installed etrust ezarmor, and i attempted a connection at my high school. and i think it read the server there, because the firewall app came to life saying that it found a new ip address, twice.  it's also saying about my internet connectivity gear, that my 1394 net adapter is disabled in the problem devices area of the system info window, when it clearly stated in the network connections windo, that its enabled.  PLEASE HELP, I WANT TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET FROM SCHOOL!!!:smileysad: (also, all the ping commands i told it to do were successful, my guess, browser trouble)
