Okay, another wireless newbie here. I have a new Inspiron 8600, 2300 broadband router, Comcast high speed internet connection. The computer has the Centrino "package" with wireless card. Platform is XP Pro. Here's my question. This is the only computer I have, and I want to be able to use it anywhere in the house. I know that the cable gets hooked up to the cable modem, then the router gets connected to that, but when I ran the setup program that came with the router it said I needed to connect the router to my computer which is exactly what I don't want to do. Do I have to have a separate "network" computer to make this all work, or can I just have my one laptop be really wireless. There was no book in the box that the router came in. Thanks in advance for any help.
Yes you can just connnect one computer through wireless as you want to do. But, until you get the router set up you may have problems and it is easier to set the router up with a wired connection. Does your laptop have and ethernet card? If so, then connect it to the router through the ethernet card, get the router set up, then unplug the ethernet cable and try to connect through wireless. The user's manual for the 2300 can be found at:
although you really should have gotten the same thing with the router. Note that in setting up the router, it is best to use the Web-based configuration utility.
okay, I've put in the program disk and followed the directions with all the cords etc, EXACTLY as stated. When it tries to detect the router it cannot find it. I've unplugged and replugged everything, turned off the phone and answering machine all to no avail. What do I do now? Since it can't detect the router, it won't go any further with the set up program.
Forget the software - use the web-based configuration utility. The sofware has a bug in it. It looks for the router on the wrong IP address. You do not need the software.
Does Comcast require a registered MAC address? You may need to contact them to see if you need to enter the MAC address of your computer into the router in order for the Comcast service to recognize it. Have you tried resetting the modem. To do this turn off the modem, router, and computer. Turn the modem on and give it about 5 minutes to synchronrize with the network, then turn on the router and wait another minute before turning on the computer and trying to configure the router. Note that I have never used the Dell TrueMobile product. But in the 20 or so times I've set up networks like this, I have had to do nothing except plug the device in. It should be that easy.
okay, I did that. When I check device status it shows lan to router as ok, but wire to router and internet to router as no. I can't believe this should be as difficult as it is. Help me Steve!!! please?! Do I need to "turn something on"?
