WIRELESS NETWORK

I HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD INSPIRON 4000 WITH ME.  I HAVE TRIED TO INSTALL THE LINKSYS - WIRELESS G ADAPTOR.  THE COMPUTER RECOGNIZES THAT IT IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY BUT WILL NOT PULL UP THE ICON NEEDED TO CONNECT TO MY LINKSYS ROUTER AND DSL CONNECTION.  ALSO - WHEN THE LIKKSYS ADAPTOR IS INSTALLED I CANNOT USE MY DIAL UP INTERNET CONNECTION.  I HAVE DEALT WITH LINKSYS AND HAD A SAVY FRIEND CHECK IT OUT TO NO AVAIL.  I'M NOT SURE IF PERHAPS I NEED AN ETHERNET CARD FOR THIS TO WORK.

How did you connect to the router in order to set it up?

My computer does not have an ethernet port - therefore I had to install the adaptor using the install directions from Linksys.  As I cannot reach my dial out service (AOL) when the adaptor has been installed I could not utilize the Linksys utility which installs online - also their system online does not serve ME.  I'm beginning to think that this is a lost cause.  A friend installed my adaptor into her computer and it worked fine (laptop in my home) therefore I know the software nor my input with information to match the router is not at fault.  My daughter can use her laptop all over the house and get the wireless signal - the router is doing it's job.  Perhaps this computer is just out of date and not set up for wireless.

Network cards are about $10 after rebates.  Worth the effort to dump AOL.  You can still get AIM without the AOL service, I think.

SO - YOU ARE SAYING THAT I DO NEED A NETWORK CARD FOR THIS SYSTEM TO WORK.  THE REASON I AM KEEPING AOL IS FOR TRAVEL TO MY PARENT'S HOME WHERE DIAL UP IS THE ONLY OPTION - THE BOONIES OF ARIZONA.

All you need is a NIC card, yes.
