Windows explorer freezing up

I have an  Inspiron 530, purchased in September of 2008, with Windows Vista.  2GB Memory Ram, and Intel(R)  Duo PCU.

During usage, Explorer freezes up, and I need to use task manager to shut down and re-start.  I have done everything possible, to cure the problem, including closing out all add ons, which when I did so, caused my sytem to not operate properly.  I had all the same add ons with my previous system, (windows XP) and had only 1 GB of ram on that system, and never had these problems.  I have tried every thing Dell has resommended to no avail.  If I am working on something, and it freezes up, I lose all and must start over again.  Can someone please help me? I have used all suggestions sent by Microsoft, including scans, and found no problems.   Other than throwing the system in the trash, what can I do to repair this problem?

Are you talking about Internet Explorer, or Explorer (which is what makes your desktop function).

As I type this, I notice you mentioned Addons so I will take that as IE7.  I had this problem on all my pcs with VISTA, and actually on my XP Mini.  I dont' know if it was an update from Microsoft that messed it up, if it was a program I used, or if it was just coincidence.  But IE7 seemed to lock up many time a day and you would have to CTRL-SHIFT-ESC to call up task manager, and then click close application.

I ended up trying IE8 RC 1 on a couple machines and only had 1 or 2 lockups in the last month.  On the other machines, I have not upgraded yet to IE8 until the final release via windows update but I switched to Firefox.  It seems faster, and doesn't lock up.

So as a temporary fix for surfing, try IE8 and if that doesn't help, try Firefox.
