Dell VRTX shared storage

Am setting up a Dell VRTX with 2 hosts. Have setup a virtual disk to be shared by the 2 hosts. Have enable the multi assignment mode. After upgrading the 2 hosts with VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0-5310538.x86_64-Dell_Customized-A03.iso both host can see the shared storage fine. Running VM's on the 2 hosts without any problem.

The CMC however states: "Do not use this mode (multi assignment) unless the servers have Cluster Services installed on them. Use of this mode without Cluster Services may lead to corrupted or lost data". Our Windows 2008 and 2012 servers to be hosted on the Dell VRTX, do have Cluster Services installed on them.

Would it still be ok to run it like this or should I have 2 virtual disks assigned to each blade instead (which I what I do not really want).

Thanks

Klaus

    Hello

It should be fine to run like that. The warning is an attempt to avoid shared storage from being used improperly. Whatever you have using the shared storage needs to be aware that it is not the only software using the storage. Some form of clustering service that is able to communicate changes between the clusters is needed. If the storage is shared without some form of clustering then the data will be corrupted since no service will be present to maintain persistence between the software.

    Thanks

    Thanks Daniel.

The VRTX is running VMware 6.5.0 on the hosts and a mix of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2012. So according to your reply no additional actions needed in the area of clustering ? In our previous virtual server platform (Intel Modular Server) we also had shared storage in combination with VMware. So VMware should be aware that other hosts use shared storage.

    best regards,
