Help with using server as workstation

I have a PowerEdge 1600SC that I was using for a project that is currently completed. I am using the server at home and it is not doing much as a server. My workstation died and I have been using my Dell 8100 Notebook as my workstation but it does not have the power I need for the applications I want to run and the dependability that I need. (it is getting old and out of warranty)  My question is does it make sense to use the server as a workstation and a server running windows 2000 server? I use Office XP (2002) the other computers hooked up to the server are just family computers using it as a firewall to the internet. I have not been able to get Exchange Server working well at home.

I am sure that I could go out and buy a new box and that may be the easiest approach and less time consuming but most costly. I am asking for some advice and thoughts time and problems it would be. I may have another project I need the server for and will need it to be open to the www but currently it is not but if that happens than I would get a new box. Once again is it worth the trouble configuring it to be both now if in 2 months everything changes.

I am a business man and not a techie!

Just depends on what kind of apps you'll be running on it. I have a 1600SC that I bought to use as a desktop, and it's a bada$$ computer. I threw 640MB of RAM in it, and it flies, but due to the lack of 3rd party support for video and sound, it doesn't run most games and such. I found a soundcard that worked fine for 10 bucks from www.pcimicro.com, but there have been huge discussions on the video card debate...if you're just surfing the net, or doing non video intensive things, I'd recommend it. If you plan on playing hi-res games and such in the future, I'd just build your own or find a good deal on a desktop model...

I have no need to play video games but I do have heavy graphics work with many Adobe Products that use up memory but maybe does not require a great video card. I think it sounds as if the best thought is build or but a new box.
