I have an r740 server. And the motherboard has riser power numbers 0, 1, and 2. Here, after installing only the 1st riser kit and installing the GPU, is it possible to use both the 1st and 2nd riser auxiliary power supplies (225W each) to supply power to the GPU? I thought that if this were possible, it would be possible to exceed the 300W power limit of the installable GPU.
hmmm... you’ve got yourself an awesome RTX 4090 GPU, which is really powerful. as I know. Now, you want to put it in your old r740 server. At first I must to say that it is not supported by the server in official. So you take your own responsibility. But just I commented the problem is, the server’s power supply isn’t strong enough for this big card.
The riser cables you own only give 225W each, but the RTX 4090 needs I think at least twice that it needs a whopping 450W to run well. It’s like the card is super hungry and the cables are just tiny snacks. Probably forcing it can cause crashes, slow performance, or damage.
However lets see also how our community contribute it. Because their own experiences are valuable such a these cases.
