I am remotely trying to manage a VRTX server which is having an issue. The raid controller is unable to turn on which is denying access to the shared storage. I believe this is due to error VLT0222 which indicates the 12V PPC, voltage is out of range. I would like to apply the most recent chassis infrastructure firmware update, but am unable to do so as the chassis seems to be hung in the powering on state.
I've been able to update the CMC firmware while the chassis is in this state, but not able to upgrade the chassis infrastructure firmware
Any thoughts on how to get the powering on state to complete so I can try the firmware upgrade would be greatly appreciated.
I would start with looking at the power supply module and check the indicators. The power supply's AC indicator is green if AC power is available. The power supply's fault indicator is amber if the power supply is faulty. If no indicators are lit, ensure that AC power is available from the PDU and that the power cable is properly connected to the power supply module.
Let me know if you also see anything additional in the CMC log as well.

I was able to downgrade the CMC to 2.04 and now the system is reporting that the power is on. So, I can deal with the underlying issue. The shared perc controllers won't power up and the suggested resolution is to upgrade the chassis infrastructure. I have now attempted the Chassis Infrastructure Firmware upgrade from 2.00.A00 to 2.21.A00, but that process is failing. RACADM shows issues with Planar I/O Processor firmware and Main board.
I decided to try upgrading the CMC to 2.10 which was released just prior to the chassis infrastructure firmware update. Of course, that update now has me back to the dreaded "powering on" power state which means I can't attempt the chassis infrastructure firmware update. I did have a user power cycle the chassis for me and I got the critical error 12V PPC is out of range. I got that error to clear by resetting the CMC which leads back to the powering on state.
OK. I'm back to CMC version 2.04, with power state "on" instead of "powering on" and still unable to apply the chassis infrastructure firmware updates. The error in the chassis log suggests reading the release notes with the updates, but there aren't any notes with 2.1 or with 2.21. There are notes with previous versions, but not these 2 so I don't know where to go from here.
The Firmware update screen indicates that the Chassis Infrastructure Main Board is in a ready state for an update. I'm able to upload the new firmware image, but once it begins to apply the update, the chassis log shows 2 identical errors...

RACADM shows that one of the errors which look identical in the chassis log is related to the planar I/O processor and the other is related to the main board. Since the planar I/O error occurs first, I'm guessing that error is causing the main board error. So, my assumption is that something is wrong between the shared PERCs and backplane.
These forums are monitored by Dell and I wanted to reply to your message. If you'd like assistance troubleshooting your VRTX chassis, I'd be happy to assist. However, if you were really only looking to try to find what the other poster's solution was, that's fine, too.
