I have DELL PowerEdge 2500 server with PERC3/DC controller serving 3 SCSI HD in RAID 5 on Ch-0 (1x6 backplane)
There are two logical drives created LD0 and LD1 (both showing RAID5 and #stripes = 3)
I'm trying to increase the size of the LD0 by adding two more identical SCSI drives into array.
This is how "Physical Drive" configuration looks like right now:
RAID Ch-0
ID
0 ONLIN A00-00
1 ONLIN A00-01
2 ONLIN A00-02
3 READY
4 READY
When I select "Reconstruct" from the main menu I get message that "None of the configured logical drives can be reconstructed."
DELL support tells me that reason is that there are two logical drives created. Since one logical drive is only 4MB and probably created by mistake and is not used by OS at all I asked if I can delete that LD1. Tech support guy told me that if I do that I will loose whole array and with that all data on the LD-0 too????
I would appreciate your help and advice. Is there any online documentation for PERC3/DC and dellmgr utility?
You allready got the message from dell support. You have multilevel raid which cannot reconstruct. I would prefer to create new raid1 with new harddisks. move LD1 to this new R1 if possible. Delete old LD1 after that and increase LD0.
This sounds doable. During creation of RAID1 with two new HDs is there any tricky parameter that I need to be aware? I assume that LD2 will be created on the RAID1 automatically. If I understand you correctly steps would be to first create new RAID1, delete LD2 if created automatically, move LD1 from RAID5 to RAID1 (I don't know how to do this part - please can you give me further instruction), delete LD1 now residing on two new HDs, and then controller will let me "reconstruct" RAID5 with adding two new HDs into it.
