Unable to create more than one VD using Perc 6/i
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with what appears to be a unique problem - that is, I've not seen anything like this on Google.
I've got a brand new T410 with a Perc 6/i adaptor and 3x2TB WD SATA drives. The firmware on the server and Perc adaptor are up to date.
I want to make two RAID5 virtual disks: 2TB and 1.6TB because I'm going to be running ESXi and this has an individual volume limit of 2TB.
So, I go into the Perc Integrated Configuration Utility and start creating my virtual disks. I create a disk group and then two virtual disks. See pics below:

So, everything looks good so far. Then I exit and reboot but this next screen is what I see when it comes back up:
And going back into the Perc config I can see that the second virtual disk has indeed disappeared:
Why do I get this error? All my hard drive cables have been checked and re-checked. Indeed, if I create one big virtual disk that occupies the whole available space it's fine. This problem only happens if I create more than one.
Will someone please help me!

Hey Andy,
I know this post is pretty old, but I'm hoping someone might read my question. This is the first post I've been able to find with ANY info related to my issue. Thanks for the info about the physical configuration. I have the perc 6/i and I've had a 3 disk RAID 5 VD running without problem for quite awhile. I'm running out of disk space, so I recently installed 3 additional hard drives and wanted to configure them as a second RAID 5 VD. I've tried everything I can find in the RAID utility and can't create the second VD. I can see the original group. I can see all 6 of the physical disks. I just can't get to the create command. I'd appreciate any suggestions on a next step.

You create a new VD (array) by highlighting the controller on the VD MGMT screen, hitting F2, Create/New.
If you can't create a new VD:
What kind of message do you get when you try?
What is the status of your "new" disks on the PD MGMT screen?
What is the make/model of your disks?6142

I am also getting the "The following VDs are missing" message when I reboot. I currently have 2 VDs Raid 1 occupying slots 0,1 for VD1 and 2,3 for VD2. I want to add a 3rd VD, tried Raid 1 and 5, disks occupying slots 4,5 or 4,5,6 for Raid 5. Everything seems fine (able to create and initialize) until I reboot. Then they come up missing.

Hi Everyone,
I appreciate the input and the consideration. My problem is solved and I'm not even sure how. On the recommendation of Dell, I pulled all the drives, cables and the RAID card out of the server and re-seated everything. I then imported the drives, after starting the controller back up. After that, I was able to create the VDs exactly as I had tried to do before. I haven't had a problem since. I have no idea exactly what I fixed, but I'm glad it's working.

OK, after hours of faffing around and countless "The following VDs are missing" messages, I found the problem. I've never seen this configuration considered illegal before, but you live and learn. Put simply, I had to move my RAID5 array to the 'front' of the controller, i.e. occupying the first available Perc channel 0 connectors rather than straddle the two Perc channels. See pic below:
