Powervault 124T taFlag[39] and taFlag[55] errors

Our Powervault 124T has been topsy turvy. Last week the 2nd magazine wasn't 'visible' by our Backup Exec media server, This was resolved by loading ver91 firmware from the ethernet/RMU utility. And the Dell driver for the medium changer was also loaded.

Afterwards, we were able to Inventory and perform backup jobs.

Today the issue is that the Powervault is again throwing errors (similar to last week) of taFlag[39] and taFlag[55].  The manual says for taFlag[39] to run extended diagnostics. What are extended diagnostics? The only diags I see from RMU and the LCD panel are the same. (Picker, magazine, inventory and random moves tests.)

And the BackupExec jobs fail with error of:

"The job failed with the following error: A backup storage read/write error has occurred.

If the storage is tape based, this is usually caused by dirty read/write heads in the tape drive. Clean the tape drive, and then try the job again. If the problem persists, try a different tape. You may also need to check for problems with cables, termination, or other hardware issues."

I get the same error when I do a Cleaning job.

Sometimes the error will change if I do a Catalog job. That error often says "Physical media mount error"

(I submitted my plight to BExec forum and they said to install the driver from Microsoft so that medium changer says "Unknown device". )

Attached is the log from the RMU utility.

Thanks!

I'm sure you have already resolved by now, but for other that may see this and wonder about extended diagnostics.

If you navigate to the web interface of your tape drive (you will have had to plugged it into your network and configured IP settings prior) then you will see a lot of diagnostic options.

For me [39] ended up being a stuck tape.

I was able to use the web interface to eject the stuck tape (I was lucky as this doesn't always work) and then I ran a random move test to verify it was not going to continue.

Anyway, the web interface has an "Error Logs and Diagnosticswhere you can do a lot of other diagnostics.

Hope this helps someone else in the future.

Cheers!

P.S.  I was told by Dell that re-flashing the firmware can help eject tapes stuck in drive should the web interface fail to do so.  I didn't have to do that though.
