I am trying to install the OS on a 745N using the tools provided. When I run the USB key preparation tool it tells me that no valid key can be found. I am not using a Dell supplied key and it is not 64MB in size, (it is 1GB), could this be the problem?
When I run the Reinstallation Console I get a message that the user NASUser cannot be created, even though I'm running with full Admin rights. Has anyone else had this? Is it related to the fact that I haven't been able to prepare the USB key?

I had the same problem with the Dell Key. I formatted the key then it worked. If you try to prepare key and it fails you will need to format again. Thats just my experience.

Not sure about the second part of your question.
The Application wouldn't recognise a USB key as a valid drive but would recognise a Compact Flash Card I had installed. I created the files on this and then copied all across to the key, (remember to unhide hidden and system files before doing this).
Whilst I suspect you fixed your problem long ago, I have only just stumbled across this posting and have justhad the same 2 problems:
Re-formatting the USB key and reprepping it does indeed work, and as for the unable to create NASUser error, I found that I was using a machine that had previously had the REinstallation process run from it and had to manually delete the existing NASUser and the NASUser group, once I had done that, the reinstall console "reinstalled" fine.
A 64mb key is supplied with the 745n for re-installation purposes. If you want to use a different/larger key then create a 64mb partition and use the prep utility on the resourse cd to create a bootable key with the rebuild files on it.
