Cannot connect to printer over USB
Hi Guys,
I have recently changed laptop, dell 600 to dell 630 and tried installing my Lexmark x5470 onto it.
The installation is kicked off by connecting the USB cable, and it runs through until it gets to a point stating "cannot connect to the all-in-one, please disconnect USB cable, turn off/on printer, restart pc"
This has no effect, so I've checked on the web, but there seems to be no sign of any other solutions. I emailed lexmark support who first suggested downloading updated installation software which had no effect at all. They then suggested it was a firewall problem, my firewall is turned off and set to my company network settings. We tried it on a PC in the office, it loaded fine, but on another dell 630 it wouldn't work. I checked the drivers etc in the system panel, they're all loaded fine i.e. no strange icons, the only hint of an issue is on the Intel ICH8 controller, no driver is installed and driver detection programs highlight this as an issue. I tried to upload the driver fro this I found on the web, but windows tells me it is no better than what I have installed. Can anyone help?

OK..... the printer worked on your 600, right?
So we know the printer is OK.
The difference if the newer PC (the 640) which has different USB root hub components.
This "could be" a signal timing issue between the new machinew and your (working) printer.
How long is your current cable? Have you measured it? If it's around 10ft, one of the quickest ways to make sure you do NOT have a timing issue is to replace it with a 6ft cable...... even if it's temporary.

Easier said than done :smileysad: I'm looking but having spent 5 hours updating drivers etc, I'm getting no joy on the SMBus. Awaiting some help from Dell support who kindly phoned me today :smileyhappy:

Thanks Llynster, I'll try another cable that is definitely USB 2.0 compliant.

I was kind of excited that it may be something so simple......but no. My cable was ~10ft and was actually two joined together, but reducing it to one cable much less than 10ft made no difference. The search continues......

Then I think you found your issue. Try finding an updated driver for the controller.
