Cannot transfer photos from camera onto computer...HELP!

I have a Windows XP (XPS 400). Printer is a Photo 964.

I have been having problems transferring photos/video from my camera to my computer. I used to always put my memory card into the SD/MMC slot on my printer. I've had my computer for about 3 1/2 years and never had any problems with transferring photos. But about a month or 2 ago I started having problems. Considering that didn't work, instead of inserting the memory card, I would hook up the USB cable that came with my Nikon COOLPIX L3 camera, and hooked it up to the PictBridge on the printer. The computer would pick up the pictures, but every time I would click on Next, everything would freeze up and the pictures would not successfully transfer onto the computer. So I eventually had to hook the camera USB cable to the slot on the computer tower, which did work for awhile. But now, I'm back to the same problem, where the pictures do not successfully transfer and my computer freezes up.

I also have problems scanning things. The Dell-All-In-One Center freezes every time I use it. I also sometimes have problems viewing my photos. I'll open up a file that has photos that I had taken from a specific event, and would sometimes take awhile to open. I've noticed I have had all of these problems, since I had to download an Anti-virus tool from Norton. I have dial-up, and so the virus protection wasn't 100% working, so I contacted them thru the online chat, and they gave me a link to a tool I had to download. Ever since I downloaded it, that is when I noticed the problems transferring photos. Any help would be much appreciated!
