Computer beeps & feezes when printer is connected.

I have a Dell Inspiron 4700 running XP. I just got a new HP Photosmart C4280 All in one printer. I have installed all of the drivers for the printer successfully. Everytime I attempt to connect the printer to the computer, the computer either freezes, or slows dramatically, and beeps constantly. Once the printer has been connected the computer is unusable & I have to hard shut down, in order to force the computer back into working condition. I am not very savvy with computers, but have tried everything the HP folks suggested. The printer connects via a USB port, as did my previous Dell Printer, and all the USB ports that I have came with the computer. I have checked their status through My Computer, Properties, Device Manager, where it says everything is working.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

THANK YOU!!

You need to confirm that the printer is OK and not drawing excessive power from the USB port.  If you know someone else with a PC that will let you connect the printer to their PC to see if the same or something similar happens or that it connects OK. You don't have to "install" the printer on the other PC, just connect it to see what happens.

If it does the same thing on another PC then the printer is defective.

If it's OK on the other PC, then it's back to your PC.  I'm not sure what to tell you to check or do, as it's not logical for the PC to act that way unless the USB is bad, and if it's bad your keyboard and mouse should not be working.

Did I say that I'm running an inspiron? It's a Dimension 4700. Sorry!

Thanks for the help. I considered that issue after posting my earlier comments. So, I purchased a self powered USB hub. Now, the printer connects to the computer without any problems, but it still will not print.

I was thinking it was a software problem because whenever I attempt to open a program that came with the printer, such as the HP Solution Center, I receive a message that says, "No HP devices have been detected. HP solution center will close now." I have on many occassions, chatted with the folks at HP who have run me through a gammut of procedures like chaging the BIOS on my USB drives to "No Boot", clearing disk space, reloading drivers, reloading the LPT1 port that I am currently using and other various unsuccessful things.

Because they can't figure out what's wrong the assume that it's Dell's problem. In the end, I suppose it's my problem, since my new printer won't work!

    Any brilliant ideas?

    THANKS AGAIN.

I'll check with the store where I purchased it to see if it's normal for it to draw too much power. Maybe it is defective.

First, if you are using USB, you are not using the "LPT" port which is for parallel (centronics) port connections.

Since the printer now connects OK, but is still not detected, uninstall the Printer in the Windows Device Manager, then with the printer connected restart Windows and see if Windows detects and installs the printer.  If not, you may have to start the printer install process over, which includes first disconnecting the printer from the PC (never connect a printer to the PC first or the install will fail), uninstalling all the HP software, restart Windows, then run the HP installation program and only when the install program tells you then physically connect the printer to the PC.

I feel awful! Sorry to be asking so many questions.

So, I followed the steps you suggested and as I was re-downloading the printer software I learned that the printer had too much power for the usb hub as well. So, I contact HP & they said the problem is not with the printer, but with the poor quality of USB ports in Dell computers. They suggested I update my BIOS and/or get BIOS updates from Dell. Not sure what this means or how to accomplish it. Any ideas?

    I really appreciate your help!

That's pretty much the usual comments from HP, "it's not my problem".  Some older Dell's did have some power problems, but later ones do not. And, since you are using a powered USB hub, you are not really using any power from the PC so the comment is totally invalid.

HP is great for, as I mentioned, "it's not my problem" and then the customer is left holding the bag trying to figure out what is really wrong.  I like HP products but their consumer printing product support is one of the worst in the industry.  I do part-time PC support and have encountered this many times and have seen the HP canned responses to many users.  If you can, take the unit back and either get another new one or a refund and buy a different brand.
