Laser Printer 1700 and DOS
I have a customer using a proprietary DOS program to transcribe court testimony. Her old HP LaserJet 6P died, and she bought the 1700. I connected to her machine via the parallel cable and Windows 98 sees it fine and will print. When she attempts to print from her software, nothing happens. The only printers on the list are (surprise!) HP. Is there a way to make the 1700 emulate an HP LaserJet? I hate the thought of setting up a "User Defined" printer in her software.

Hi MFAY,
The age old problem of DOS with Laser printers. I'm not affiliated with Dell in any way - though my experience with this is through working with an old DOS program; written before lasers...
When the DOS program was written, it would have been created to work either on a dot matrix or laser; using a proprinter for dm or PCL4/PCL5 for Laser. Unfortunately support for these ran out a long time ago.
What I've used - depends on the environment the program is run under. If they're still running the program under DOS/UNIX, you're kinda stuck - there's not too much that you can do under a NATIVE environment (as the 1700n doesn't appear to process direct PCL4/5). Unless you can get the printer to process this; you'll need to find an interpreter program to run the processing for you - or go and get a HP1100! Try Google to use the 1700 - it's a fantastic printer in all other respects!
Adam.
