I have a Dell 1720dn Laser Printer connected to the network via an ethernet cable. Multiple computers on my network are able to print to this printer.
I have a Dell XPS 400 (Windows XP SP2) that is connected to the network and was able to print until recently. Now printing from any application (including the Windows Printer Properties "Print Test Page" button) results in no printout or error message. After opening the print job queue for the printer, I've found that all jobs end up with a status of "Error" (not very helpful).
When I visit the printer's web interface (192.168.0.17) from a web browser on the problem PC, all looks well.
I've tried adding a new printer to Windows. The printer does not show up when using the browse to the printer function--instead I must provide the IP address. I'm able to add another copy of the printer, but that instance of the printer suffers identical problems.
I have also checked the printer properties. In the Install Options tab, after pushing the "Ask Printer" button, Windows complains with "Could not ask printer due to a communications error".
Any thoughts on what could be happening or what else I can do to troubleshoot this issue?

check for any firewall software on this XPS computer of yours. any printer application might be being blocked by software like, mcafee, norton , or whichever software that u have on this computer.
dont have a look at the ports. i re-read your article and i think this can be fixed by reinstalling the printer again ( on the XPS computer , that is.)
do check for firewall software's PROGRAM PERMISSIONS and not ports.PROGRAM PERMISSIONS will have printer filenames with full access/blocked access / one way access listed across them.
what is the antivirus/firewall software that u have installed on the XPS computer ??
if everything was working fine until recently then there has to be a program that u might have installed recently.
IF NOT,
without going into too much techno stuff. add the printer again on the XPS computer.also reinstall the drivers on the XPS computer .
check for windows firewall ( the default one) to make sure file and printer sharing is enabled, check this on the host computer also.
I found that another XP machine was unable to print. Vista (and I believe Linux) were able to print. Both XP machines were able to print up until a few days ago.
I reinstalled the printer driver, but still unable to print.
A friend of mine asked if I had tried restarting the printer. I didn't think it would help, since other machines could print. But, after a restart of the printer, all machines can now print to this printer.
Thank you for providing me with diagnostic assistance.
Having exactly the same problem but with the 1720dn. It works perfectly well from 3 PCs but not from 2 others. We have Mcaffee (unfortunately) and it can see the address - I can even print from the Dell TCP/IP page - just not from word, notepad etc. It says 'printer offline' every time. It's also causing another PC to crash occasionally when sending print jobs.
