Browser Questions

Got some questions. My older machine with Vista and IE-9  just keeps chugging along, so I will continue to use it. No other version  of IE for Vista is available. Many times it takes a lot of time to load pages, which should come up right away, like MSN.com and NBC's "Newsvine" I get messages that my browser is outdated across the top of some sites like the two mentioned above, but it still seems to work...just slow page retrival in a lot of cases. I only have 1.5 MB speed, but think that should be enough in most cases. On some pages like NBC, which has a lot of links and content, it takes quite awhile for some pages to come up

I have online radio on a good portion of the time, and this sometimes seems to bog the page delivery down to some degree. At any rate, it tends to get annoying and I willing to try another browser. I would like this change to be pretty much seamless and trouble free...so I don't lose MSN or My Favorites, and my Outlook email, which is tied to MSN. And I don't want to have go in and make a bunch of setting adjustments. I don't want Google tracking me if I would go that route. Thanks for any suggestions

Everyone tracks you, so take the appropriate precautions.  Yes, everyone.

Depending on your system and situation, an upgrade to a more modern OS would be my first recommendation.

Google Chrome would be my second recommendation.

    Firefox is third.

There exist other browsers, but there are really no other contenders.  All browsers give you the ability to import your Internet Explorer settings, so the transition should be fairly painless.

    Thanks for the reply.

I'd be happy with Windows 7, but this computer is approaching five years old, so I will just change the browser as I believe it is causing a lot of my problems. It gradually got this way, and I suspect that it due to web sites and pages becoming more complex over the years.

Vista got a bad rap, and for good reason, but the computer builders did NOT help by UNDERSIZING most systems they sold with Vista.  If you have less than 2GB of RAM, simply browsing the web may be too much for your system.  That can be blamed on the fact that today's websites do require more system resources.  The fact that some websites don't work on older browsers is simply a lack of support for those browsers by the website designers.

Change browsers - that should help the websites displaying improperly, but if you find that it still runs slow, consider upgrading the RAM in your system.  Vista requires almost a 1GB to run, and if you only have 1GB of RAM installed (which was all too common), all you have to do is open Word or Outlook and MSN or Yahoo, and you are maxed out already and your system will slow.

    Good luck.
