How to update Dell Installed OEM software
I have an Inspiron 6000 running XP Pro and was wondering if there was some kind of freeware software I could run that would tell me if there were any updates to the OE M software that came with this unit. Also where I should look for the updates on the web. Do the updates have to come from Dell, or can I go to the manufacturers web site who made the software? Lastly, is there anything I should be aware of before I do the updates?
Thanks in advance for any assistance the community can provide.
James

There are some sites and their (for a fee) software that will tell you if programs are up to date or if drivers are up to date. However, why pay for something you can get free. If you want to see if there are any available program updates for a program, just go to the site for that program and check. If you want to check the hardware device drivers you can go to www.support.dell.com and check on drivers using your service tag number. There may be some limited OEM software updates listed, but it's rare. OEM software such as Microsoft Office IS supported by Microsoft - it's no different than the full retail version except it's only legally licensed for the PC it was delivered with (which is the same for the Microsoft Windows).
It's iffy on going to the hardware device manufacturer's web site for OEM software or drivers. The OEM software may never get any updates and on hardware devices many devices have a Dell custom implementation and in that case you need Dell supplied drivers. But, as Dell does not regularly issue updates and in most cases only issues an update if the device does not meet published spec's there may not be any Dell update for certain devcies. Also the old adage applies: "it it ain't broke, don't fix it" on drivers. Also, many times driver updates are issued to fix a specific problem and if that fix does not apply to you then you don't need the update.
