PowerPoint slide printing

I have created a PowerPoint presentation with a few charts and graphs. The template has a dark background, so the program automatically adjusts the printing and lines to white.

However, when printing the slides (grayscale or pure black and white), the program does not adjust the legend or axes labels to a dark color on a light background. The text is there, but is white on white. So the graphics are useless for notetaking.

It doesn't matter if I create the charts/graphs in Excel or in PowerPoint. The slides print the same way.

In a pinch, I copied the charts to Word, then cut and pasted into PowerPoint. However, the objects copy over with dark print on a white background. It works for printing, but looks lousy in the slideshow.

I am using Office 2007 in compatibility mode with XP Pro. I can't change the dark template and the program has to be running in compatibility mode.

Any tips?

When you choose Office button, Print,  Print, change the setting color/grayscale to color.

I would prefer to print in pure black and white as the slides are easier to read in the handout (four slides per sheet) mode. This is especially true for for second and third generation copies from the office copy machine.

Using the setting on a Laser Printer (Black and White, not Color Laser or Color Inkjet) will produce the results you're after. If necessary, change your printer setting (on a color printer) to print grayscale and your slides will print as you desire.

I never did figure out how to get the tables and charts to print properly in pure black and white. I ended up saving the objects as pictures in a separate file for the handouts.

The drivers in our HP LaserJet printer were updated to eliminate that as a potiential problem, too.

Now that I have a bit of time, I was able to partially reproduce the problem in a native PowerPoint 2007 project saved in the xml (pptx) file format.

I created a new project using the default Foundry theme (gray background, white/green/blue text), applying the dark background to all slides.

Regular text is white in the slides. It prints out in black in pure black and white.

Creating a table in PP, the borders and header text are all white. The body text is black. They all print as black in pure black and white. They are fine.

When creating a chart (Insert-->chart), the axes, labels, and gridlines are all in white. When printing the axes and gridlines change to black. All of the labels are white on white, so they do not show.
