Windows error message

Every tie I close my browser I get a message saying windows has encountered a problem and needs to close & wants to send an error report .

This has been happening for a few months & is getting REALLY annoying .

Dell Dimension   Win XP with latest service pack.

Any Ideas ?

Thanks

Rich

    1. What browser & version e.g. is it IE7?

    2. Any changes made just before problem started, e.g. did you install/update Adobe Reader 9.1?

Unusual for IE8, since after installing IE8, when it first launches it both scans & suggests fixes for any detected problem causing Add-ons, the most common fix is to disable incompatible BHO type Add-ons

    1. Launch IE8, click on Tools, from the dropdown list click on Manage Add-ons

    2. When utility opens, make sure the Show: dropdown menu indicates Currently loaded add-ons

    3. Scroll down the Add-ons list & look for a BHO type entry Adobe PDF Link Helper

    4. Under Status, if Enabled, click on Adobe PDF Link Helper

    5. Click the Disable button & then the Close button

    6. Close IE8 (if that’s the problem BHO you will receive the shutdown error for the last time)

    7. Launch IE8 then shutdown IE8 again to check if fixed

If not the problem BHO you can Enable it again & repeat the above choosing any application install/updates that coincided with start of browser problem & also appear in the Add-ons list

If flash player, then it will be an ActiveX Control type

If the culprit you may then want to Enable it again then click on the More information link & the Search for………provider link

Alternatively Disable them all then re-enable them one at a time, but I’d use the above method first

Edit: was composing & posting my reply whilst JR had also replied

Have you tried running IE 8 with no addons? the install of IE 8 should have placed the appropriate shortcut in the system tools folder. Otherwise click start, run, type

    iexplore.exe -extoff

[note space between e and -], click OK.

If the error does not occur with addons disabled, close IE, then control panel, internet options applet, programs tab, click manage addons, disable all non microsoft addons, test IE; if OK, enable one or more of the other addons, test, etc. until you find the one causing the error. You can then go to the web site of that addon provider to see if there is a version compatible with IE 8.

If the error still occurs with all addons disabled, you could look in event viewer to see if there is information about the error. (to reach event viewer, right click My computer icon, click manage, click the + next to event viewer, select application and/or system; look for error messages (red circle with white cross) dating from when IE crashed. Double click on the event to see details. You can copy the description of the event to your clipboard by clicking on the icon like a double page on the right of the event description window, then paste it here. You can also click on the link ('for more information...'), which will download and open a help page that may contain some useful information and advice.

Just a little confused since the Adobe BHO was indeed the first one I suggested you disable?

Anyhow, glad to hear it worked  :emotion-21::emotion-5:

To see the Suggest as Answer button (& other options) you need to be viewing the Dell Forum thread posts in Flat View

    1. Click on “Expand User Panel” (top RHS of screen) to display your activity, posts & other info

    2. Now click on Edit Profile

    3. Click on the Site Options tab, check the Forum Posts Default View is set to Flat View

    4. If not then change it to that

    5. Then scroll all the way down & click the Save button

It can take a couple of minutes to change the view but the next time you view any thread, you should see a number of button options at the bottom of each post, the RHS button should be Suggest as Answer
