Cannot open applications get memory error

My computer starts up just fine.  But when I try to open an application I get an error message.  It typically reads. "[name of program].exe-application error.  The instruction at "0x00409e6b" referenced memory at "0x00b5000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.  I can open folders and was able to hook up to a network and remove all of my important documents.  But I cannot open any applications at all.

do you get the error on just one application, or all applications..if its just one, its the application problem and not your computer

the first thing i would do is to restore your computer to an earlier date, possiblly before this problem started...can you do that?

Hey, different newb with the same problem.

I'm not entirely sure where to got to restore to an earlier date but it doesn't really matter, I think.  Anywhere I go I get the same message no matter what.  i.e. I can open the local disk, control panel, program files, etc. and no matter what I try to open in any of these folders I get the same message.

I'm also getting a rundll error "error loading c:WINDOWS\system32\atgban.dll  the specified module could not be found"  Don't know if that's related or not.

is there anything that you have done that might have started your problem,,did you add some software??

i have seen a few that yahoo toolbar would cause the problems..

another solved the problem buy going to -tools-manage add/ons, and started to disable each one until he found that is was one of the programs there that was causing the problem.

of course , you can restore your compouter as it came from the factory, probably would get rid of your problems.
