Have only had my Dimension 4600 since Feb 2004 and for the third time it doesn't recognise the CD/DVD drive (not listed under My Computer) can anyone help, only last week I was on the phone for 2 hours to India getting the problem resolved and can't afford to waste any more time calling people who find my accent difficult to understand. many thanks

Hi Aeroshona,
Ok, these are standard steps, some of if not all the Tech should have walked you through. Considering the problem is coming & going, open the case and re-seat the IDE cable going from the motherboard to the back of the drive. I even at times will try a new IDE cable, if you decide on the new cable, please get a 40-pin, 80-conductor one, usually will say ATA/100 or something alone those lines.
Enter the BIOS and verift that the Secondary IDE channel is set on "Auto".
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, articles 2 & 1; Section 12, articles 10, 2 & 3;
Best Regards
God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.
