At times my DVD drive fails to eject either by push button or software. It functions normally otherwise. The drive is a DVD+RW NEC ND-2100AD running on a Dimension 2400 P4 2.2ghz, 256mb ram, 40gb hd WinXP w/SP2.
I seem to recall having a similar problem sometime ago and was told to d/l a particular firmware for correction which I did and thought everything was ok until now.At that time the drive was replaced and worked for a while but eventually went back to no eject.
Sometimes it can be a driver issue, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1. Also consider uninstalling and re-installing the DVD software, you may consider checking the vendors site for any updates to the software as well. Did you flash the new drive with the updated firmware?

Hi Jeff, thanks for the prompt response. I d/l a new version update from NEC. Attempts to flash showed window saying "Target NEC_______ is not found correctly". Clicking OK removed the window and no opportunity is available to confirm current firmware. The windows described by NEC's instructions to determine current or new version are not obtained.
How can I determine the current firmware version? Thanks...Bill
Thank you, Skybird, I'm in no hurry this nuisance has been going on for some time. I did find an earlier version of firmware and will pursue methods to update it.
Of course as we speak it is working. Maybe the solution is to ask for help and the eject will work.
I have read this post a couple of times and have some questions. Does the drive refuse to eject only when a disc in inserted? Is that disc a commercial DVD or CD? Is that disc a DVD+R or CDR; or both? What burning software do you have installed in your system?
Since it is so random I can't be positively certain but to the best of my recollection, the tray never fails to open with a disk in it.
The disks used are DVD+R but it failed uning other DVD media.
The program is Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.
I saw the flash window show up on last attempt indicating new firmware to be version 1.92 from NEC but the current firmware was shown to be N/A. Flashed anyway and reached screen for turning off pc. did that and am waiting for next episode of non eject.
One last thing to check is to disable DirectCD in your Start-up so it is not running in the background. Sometimes packet writing software will take control of the drive. It is worth a shot to disable it and see if it helps.
