    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right Click on your C drive
    3. Click properties
    4. Click tools
    5. Click check for errors
    6. Click check now
    7. Restart the computer and check disk will run.
    8. Then you should beable to run defrag.

Please confirm that this is the drive that originally shipped with the system and that you have not reinstalled XP. The first thing I would try is to boot into safe mode and try it again. Sometimes badly fragmented drives just won't start properly.

i have tried this many times and no help i get the message             the disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some windows files  on the disk. these files can be accessed only by restarting windows . do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart  the computer?

now im lost that is my exact message i tried it many times please help thx beckie
