DVD device functions; same Device will not play/install/read CD's.

Hello all!
I have a DVD/CD player combo on an Inspiron 1100.  It plays DVD without any problems.  However, it will not read installation or other "information" CD's, nor will it play audio CD's.  When these types of discs are inserted, the green light appears, it skips, and fails to read the information or says that there is nothing there.

I welcome any advice! :smileyhappy:

Dell is using some garbage drives, this problem is way too common. Acknowledge it Dell.

I've got the same problem.  What's up with that?  Is there a fix or is Dell really using bad hardware?  Strange how the NEC 6500A can play DVDs no problem but can't even recognize a normal CD.
Boy is this frustrating for a 1st time Dell customer.  Makes me wonder if I made the right choice of brands.

I am having the exact same problem except mine is on an Inspiron 9100.  Suddenly one day stopped working reading CDs, but whit the DVDs is working fine. The DVD unit is a dual Sony R/W.

    I tryed the next:

    Reboot computer
    Reinstall software drivers on Windows
    Reboot computer
Remove DVD unit at Windows device manager
    Reboot computer
Add the DVD unit at Windows device manager
    Reboot computer
Remove the DVD unit from notebook (at power off)
Reseat the DVD unit into the notebook
    Reboot computer...

    All without success. ¿Any idea?

I am wating for a response from support service.

    Regards.

    Hello again.

I have run the Dell Diagnostics program (F12 at the Dell logo boot screen)

I am discovered that the audio CDs also are working properly!!!,  but the data CDs (the original Dell software instalation disks)  are not recognized.

    I am a little bit confused (!?)

    ¿Any idea? Thanks in advance.

I still wating for a response from support service.

    Regards.
