I have an E510. The DVD device is: HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA4164B, and I have issues with this thing. My E510 has been in my home for about 2 weeks.
This began when I discovered the the drive would not recognize Sony CD-R's that I have music on.
Then I found that, using Roxio Creator LE, it would not recognize blank Maxell CD-R's.
Additionally, it would not allow me to use DLA with Sony DVD+R's.
Windows media player does not recognize the Sony CD-R's either.
I have tried these CD's and DVD's on other WinXp machines, and they are all recognized.
I had a 40 minute chat session with Dell. The rep had me uninstall the drivers, and remove upper and lower filters using regedit. I was told to reboot the machine and try again. I did, and the problem is now worse.
Now, the Roxio Creator LE software installed with my PC does not recognize the drive Error: 'No Drive Detected'
I have browsed this forum for awhile now, and I see a multitude of problems with this drive. Please Dell, would you please respond to this message and tell me what I need to do to get a NEW drive on this PC ? I am not interested in getting the same model swapped into this machine. I just want to get a new drive, that works as it should. I do not want to have to go out and purchace a new drive myself, install it and void my warrany after only a couple of weeks. I just want to get this machine working as it should.
You can try reloading the IDE controller, Section 20, article 3 of the CD/RW link in my post. However this almost sounds like the problem associated with the Sony RootKit. See this article from:

Thanks, Jeff, I will try reloading the IDE controller, as you suggested, however, I am not confident, based on what I have read on this board, that I will be any firther along than I was before I had my chat with Dell support.
As to the Sony RootKit issue, I am not using Sony BMG music CD's, rather I am using Sony disks that were blank, that I put music on. Additionally, it does not recognize my Maxell CD's.
Assuming that I will be no better off than I was before, after installing the IDE controller, what are the steps necessary to get a new drive in this machine ? I have read posts about reinstalling windows, etc that seem to not fix much of anything. All I really want is a drive that works as it should.
The Controller step was I believe about the only thing you had not tried and I was not sure about the Sony RootKit but I wanted to mention it anyway. As for getting the drive replaced under warranty. Some have reported "their" Tech had requested them to re-install Windows as one of the steps, which is sort of extreme in many cases. You will see me mention "testing" the drive in another before going that route, whether they actually do or say to Dell at that point I have no idea. Others have said the replacement was issued without much hassle or a re-install of Windows. I guess it depends on the Tech you get. Also it seems or let me say I have gotten some e-mails from people saying they were able to reference their thread in the forum for the Tech to review as to what all they had tried.
Best Regards!

Yes, mine was resolved. Dell support asked that I run one or two tests for them and report the results. After doing that, they replaced my drive. No problems since. Only regret I have is the lousy Roxio software included does not work. When I inquired about that, the support person said 'no problem, let me give you a link to take care of that'. The link ended up being to a trial version of Nero. Sheesh, talk about doing anything to get the customer off the phone..... Best of luck...
