I recently bought a XPS 420 computer with 2 Hard drives, each about 300 GB. they both work as a RAID-Volume.

Shortly after I installed the computer, on the startup screen, one HD gave the message "Error Occurred (0)". I called the Dell support service. They said it was a Hardware problem, and that they would send me a new HD. The man I spoke with also told me that it would be better to turn off the RAID-volume, as this may have caused the error, and may also cause the same error in the future.

 

about 4 days after that, I installed the HD. I also destroyed the RAID-Volume. When I tried to install Windows Vista with the CD that I received when I bought the computer, it gave me the error "Can't find Volume that fits the Installcriteria". I was puzzled by this message (not surprised, though, because it is Windows after all)...

 

I called the Dell support service again. the first guy I got on the phone, didn't really know what he was doing. he kept me on the phone for 2 hours, literally trying things we could have done ourselves. In the end, he told me someone would call me back in the evening.

That evening, the guy that called me was much quicker in his decision: Vista doesn't work without the RAID-volume.

I had 2 questions on my mind: Why didn't the first guy tell me that, and why do you need a RAID-Volume when someone told me that a RAID-volume could potientally harm your HD.

Finally, I decided to reinstall the RAID-Volume and install windows on it. everything worked fine, until now. Not even a week after reinstalling the RAID-Volume on the new HD, windows gave the error that "logonUI.exe" failed. I rebooted my computer, and there it was: the other HD (the one that was originally installed in my computer) gave the same error ("Error Occured (0)").

 

Though I'm not 100% sure, I think that the RAID-volume caused this error (again). My question is: do I need another HD, and can I still install Vista without the RAID-Volume?
