Installing DVD burner

I have a dell dimension 8200 that came installed with an HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B in location 1 and a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616T in location 0.  I just purchased a Plextor 712a.  I am planning on installing the plextor in place of the CD-RW.  I've replace drives but never installed a completely different one.  Does anyone have any other suggestions?  Will this be similar to just swapping one for the other since most settings should be similar.  Is there anything I should note for the install?  Any install tips?

    Hi Kozilla,

A good habit, go to Device Manager, select the drive you wish to replace/remove, then click "Uninstall", shut the system down.
Dell ships their systems using the Cable Select Feature, if you have not changed the settings, then set the small jumper on the back of the new drive to CS and install it.

Section 4 of the CD/RW link in my post and installation tips as well as Dell`s Specification Pages for a number of their system. You can follow the link for yours, select "Adding & Removing Parts"

    Seasons Greetings !

For an excellent recent review of DVD burners see:

I recieved and installed my dvd burner last night.  My install was easy and went smoothly (Thank you so much for your help Predator!).  I haven't really had time to do much with the drive, but from what I have done and from all of the reviews and personal recommendations I have heard, it seems like a very good drive and it will definately meet and all of my needs.

Oh, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do with my old cd burner?

    Hi Kozilla,

    Congrats on the install!!
Best of luck with the new drive.

Many keep a known good drive around for a spare, others give them away, your choice my friend.

    Happy Holidays!
