Installing new hard-drive...

I'm trying to install a new hard-drive on my Dell (which I'm reasonably sure is a Dimension...).  The computer doesn't seem to recognize that there's a new drive plugged in, which I'm told it usually does automatically.  Any advice?

    It's a secondary drive.
     
    I'm not 100% sure of the model... it was bought in about '01, though. 
     
    It's running WindowsXP.

    Is this a primary or a secondary hard drive?  It would help to post the computer model and version of windows.

    The reason the model would be helpful, as you did not post the size of the hard drive, there could be BIOS restrictions on hard drives over120GB.
     
    Set the hard drive's jumpers to "Cable Select" and connect it to the middle connector of the primary IDE cable. Enter the BIOS setup and check that the second hard drive, is set to auto [on]   In order for windows XP to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted.   These are generic instructions for installing an additional hard drive using Windows XP Disk Management, they are by Seagate, but apply to all brands.

    Okay, the disk seems to be there in disk management, but when I right-click, the only option is "help".
