I did a symantec PC restore a week and a half ago and since thenmy PC has been running slower than ever and froze regularly. Now, tonight I started it and I got a black screen that said Internal HDD Hard Error and I can't get past it. I called DELL and they are telling that it is a software problem (even though I haven't installed anything and it is at factory settings) and that I have to pay for help and purchase a software warranty (even though I have the best hardware warrenaty my I9300 came with). I told them to forget it.
Now, I am stuck. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can boot the hardrive. I am not worried about loosing any information since I just backed everything up a week ago. I just want to be able to restart my PC.
Your hard drive is dead. Boot up and hold F12 and run diagnostics. The hard drive will fail after the DST Short Test. Record the error number. It will probably be error code 1000-0141. Call Dell tech support and report that error code and they will send you a replacement hard drive if you're under warranty.
Remove all external devices and boot from shutdown. Press and HOLD F12 as soon as you see the Dell blue (or white) logo screen. and HOLD it until the next screen appears. The logo screen will seem to hang for awhile. Keep holding F12. The next screen should be the one-time boot screen where you can select the diagnostics and run the short tests.
Thanks! Turns out you were right. I contacted DELL online support and they told meit was the hard drive. I KNEW it wasn't a softwareissue and I am glad I didn't pay the money last night. They are replacing my hard drive. Thanks for your help!
They sent me a new hard drive since it is still under warranty. Turns out that was the problem, my hard drive crashed. Still have no reason why though but, at least it working again.
