Keep All Drivers Updated/Current?

I just got off the customer service chat line and was told that I should download all current drivers on a regular basis (BIOS, Chipset, drives, "firmware", etc)...is this really a good idea? Do new drivers ever cause conflicts/problems with hardware or software (I seem to remember hearing on some occasions they have, true?)?

Should I back up my hard drive before installing them?

Thank you very much for your help!!

Keeping the drivers current is a good idea in my opinion.  It's not uncommon for later versions to have made fixes or improvements on the original version.  This can result in better performance of the hardware item who's driver is being updated.  Granted there are times in which a later version may have a bug or can create additional problems, reverting back to the older driver version isn't that complicated so the damage isn't permanent.

As for the BIOS updates.....  it is a good idea to keep BIOS versions up to date during your warranty period in my opinion.  In the event rare event you suffer a bad flash of the update you will have the warranty protection to fall back on for repairs.  Often people are reluctant to do BIOS upgrades when the system is new.  As time goes on their warranty expires and they now see a need for newer BIOS version in which to support a hardware upgrade.  In the unlikely event they experience a bad BIOS flash now, the costs of repairs will be at their expense.  When it comes to BIOS upgrades.... chances are Dell will lose interest in releasing updates long before your warranty expires.  If your system is no longer under warranty then a BIOS upgrade should not be done needlessly.  With an out of warranty machine a BIOS upgrade should only be done if there is a needed fix or hardware support in the later BIOS version.

Firmware upgrades..... depends on who releases them.  If Dell releases a firmware update then by all means I would again keep the firmware versions current during the warranty period in my opinion.  If the system is out of warranty then I would do the Dell firmware update only if needed.  If the drive's manufacturer releases a newer firmware update then I would be a little more reluctant to do an upgrade unless I was really experiencing a problem.  Since the firmware update wasn't released by Dell, I doubt they would cover the warranty repair in the rare event of a bad firmware flash.  I might be wrong on this and possibly someone else can shed some light on the warranty coverage of a non-Dell bad firmware flash.

As with any driver, BIOS and firmware update it doesn't hurt to sit back and monitor the forums after the new release comes out.  If there is a "stinker" in the bunch it doesn't take long for the complaints to appear in the forums here.

Although backups are always a good idea, it shouldn't be necessary when doing a firmware, BIOS or driver update.
