- Sure. Note that the 690 has two controllers--a SAS controller and a SATA controller. The SATA controller is connected to the Intel Southbridge. On the 690, the SATA controller does not support RAID. So, if you are not interested in RAID capability on the 690, yes you can shut off the SAS controller.
- Yes, if you are talking about the Dell SAS Storage Manager software. This software is only present on systems with the SAS 5/iR controller and is optional. Note: SAS RAID volumes can also be created with the O-ROM, so that is why I say the SAS Storage Manager software is optional. The 690 system has a SAS controller on the motherboard, but the 490 does not.

- I too have a Precision 690 using SAS and the performance is horrible! It has 2 Zeon 5050 processors and 2GB RAM. I currently have 1 500 GB hard drive connected on the SAS controller by default. Would it be wise since I am not using RAID to take it off SAS and use SATA instead? If so do I just move the connection on the MB, disable SAS in the BIOS and enable SATA in the BIOS then uninstall the SAS manager software? This is my first time working with SAS (and it has not been pleasant) and with a Precision so any help would be much appreciated. Currently this PC is about 4 times SLOWER than a 3 year old Precision 360 with one single core processor.
