Which driver do I need?
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400, I just reformated and have all the drivers loaded minus the CD/DVD, it doesn't read blank CD/DVDs, and didn't prior to the reinstall also. Windows is saying it is a PHILIPS SCB5265, but it's not on the list.. Does list another PHILIPS however. I did a search on the DELL website and found the driver, but when I went to the bottom to check which machines it will work with, it didn't list the Inspiron 6400.. Thanks for your time! Sean
You might want to try this,
The drive model matches, and it's not specific for a particular system (multi system).

Yes, it is only with blank cds. I do not THINK it will help to download any other software, but I might be wrong. I do not want to have to download software, so I will only do it if it is the solution which I don't think it is. And plus I don't have the original CD so I don't even know what it did come with..SeanSays2U

That is the one I mentioned in my original post that I found after searching that did not match up with my machine.. That is the completely reason for the post, is it that one, or is it the PHILIPS underneath the Inspiron 6400 section, and maybe that would be the reason for my CD/DVD drive to not read blank cds, any who it's late it can wait another dayWhat do you mean it doesn't match with the machine? Please elaborate. Did you try installing it and it gave you a compatibility error? Based on the description, it's not specific to any models so it should be applicable to your I6400.
Other than that, it could be the OS or the actual drive. Try safe mode if it's doing the same thing. Kinda weird that it happens only on blank CDs.

the c ompatibility link at the bottom does not list my machine. i have had it installed made no difference from the basic drivers installed by windows, also, had the vtd19 or what not. it is strange that it doesn't read blanks i have tried many different types. I had XP home before this, and now pro, and it didn't work with either. the laptop was made for xp capable of vista. what would safe mode have to offer, it would only remove more drivers? thanks sean

Technically, you don't need drivers to make CD and DVD drives work after a clean installation of Windows. The support.dell.com website does give a listing of firmware for optical drives as an optional download.
May I ask, is your optical drive able to read data and music CDs? Could you be referring to the autoplay feature in which it will pop up a window asking you whether you want to view the files in the drive, or play the file, etc, each time you put a CD in?
If the problem is only with blank CDs. It may help installing the CD-burning software that was shipped originally. It's usually Roxio or Sonic.
