Question about Replication / Cloning / Backup...

Perhaps I am using the wrong terminology here, but my basic question comes down to:

Is there a way to keep a copy of my DMX3 Data on a Clariion without actually using EMC Networker Backup Software? We have Replication Manager / Time Finder / Time Finder Clone / Time Finder Manager. Can any of them to be useful as an alternate to Backup?

Currently we backup to Clariion, then Clone to Tapes using Networker. Does any of the solutions that are not a Backup allow file level restores? I am assuming this may not work for Exchange and/or Databases. I am looking at ways to increase the efficiency of disk usage and enhance the time and/or management involved.

All suggestions are welcome!

Hi GreyWeulf .. welcome to our forums .. :-)

Don't forget to introduce you in the Coffee Break area .. You'll find a lot of interesting (and funny) threads there :D

The bad news first. You mentioned a lot of different technologies our DMX offers. Unfortunatly you mentioned only technologies allowing local copy of your data (inside same storage).

Now the good news. DMX offers a couple of tools to copy data between different storages. You can use both SRDF and Open Replicator. They are different products, with different requirements and limits. But the main limit here is that you want to copy data between a DMX and a Clariion. Thus you have only a single tool available: Open Replicator (since SRDF requires two DMX).

TimeFinder, SRDF, Open Replicator, they all don't offer "file level" backup/restore. They work with volumes and tracks. The storage can't know how different Operating systems decline the idea of "file". Thus the storage can work only with volumes and tracks.

But let's come back to your original question .. With a little knowledge of NW I'd guess you are using your Clariion as a B2D (backup to disk) via ADV_FILE devices. You backup on the Clariion to avoid multiplexing at all and later stage data to tape without affecting clients. Please note that you can't populate the Clariion using different tools (open replicator) and later ask NW to copy/move data from disk to tape.

Can you please explain better what you want to do ?? :-)

on the DMX side you have open replicator that would allow you to read/write to Clariion. On the fabric side you have recover point. Both are doing block level replication, I would investigate those two.
