VMAX over DMX

My customer is using DMX-3 and wants to upgrade to Vmax(Exploring if upgrade gives him many benefits). Please send me a link to some document that details the benefits of upgrading from DMX to VMAX OR what new features do we have in VMAX that we did nto have in DMX. I am new to Symmetrix. Please help.

OK, what benefits do you get by migrating?

When amediratta said "upgrade", I'm sure they meant replace the DMX with VMAX.

There are lots of advantages to VMAX over DMX3.

Some I can think of off the top of my head:

    Enterprise Flash Drive support

    FAST for VP

RAID virtual architecture, allowing any to any RAID migrations and minimizing mirror position use

Twice the possible front end ports

Up to 3 times the system performance

not sure you can assume that, people who work with Clariions are accustomed to data-in-place upgrades between arrays families (CX3 to CX4) for example.

    Hi amediratta,

You might find this documentation useful,

    DMX-3 specifications  http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/specification-sheet/c1304-dmx3-ss.pdf

    VMAX specifications  http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/specification-sheet/h6176-symmetrix-vmax-storage-system.pdf

You can see the comparisons between the two symmetrix products.

    Regards,

    Joe.

Over the architechural and other advantages mentioned by Quincy56 and others, the best thing what I think was really beneficial from end user perspective is the Auto Provisioning facility which started with Vmax and 5874 code.

It made life easier when there was a need to provision storage to a new host or a existing hosts. the overall steps have been reduced and the amount of time taken for provisioning is drastically reduced.

    Cheers

    Andy.

I strongly agree with that - the Clariion simplicity is integrated with the DMX architecture and it makes life a lot easier - no more seraching for free addresses on the FA's and no more waiting for 40+ minutes for mapping -  its all simple

Having been in the middle of moving all my 1600+ servers from 6 DMX-3's to 2 VMAX frames I can say that its a herculous task by itself.

But if you want to be there you have to take that journey.

1600 servers using Vmax, that is a lot! Do you have Linux on them and how much you strict to the director bit settings or HBA port flags?
