Server update utility 6.3.0.267

 hi guys,

I know i'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. So sorry if this has been answered 50 times.

I have a Dell R510 that i have just built over DRAC with win2k8 X64. I am trying to run the "DELL Openmange Server UPdate Utility 6.3.0.267. The tool seems to run fine up to a point. It has scanned the  hardware and drives and advised what needs to be updated. when i click update. "As i have never run this software before" Nothing seems to happen. It just sits there.

I am sure the problem is something either i have or have not done or i would find a heap of posts about it on the forum here. Is anyone able to hep out?

    Hi,

I have the same issue on a PE2900 and a PE2950 (have more servers but only tested on these two). Openmanage SUU 6.3.0.267 identifies 5 updates and as i click update it asks for a confirmation, but nothing happens after that.

My OS's are Win 2003 R2 x86 and one x64. Common for these server are that they are both terminal servers with Citrix Xenapp 5.0 installed. I'm running the update thru RDP.

Have also tried to just run one of the recommended updates, ie bios update.

Has anyone a resolution for this issue?

With no insult intended, I don't think it is the app :)  Of the dozens and dozens of machines I've used this on, I've not had a similar problem.

Yes  i am still having this problem.

I have re-imged the machine with 2k8 X64 non R2 and the same thing happens.

The software advises that there are updates, confirms it is going to update the components and then sits there doing nothing.

    Nice app.

    Flash,

I doubt it is the app. If you have had it working on dozens of machines. What was the configuration of the machines you have had it working on?

Did the machines have internet access? were they running 2k3 or below? Just saying that you have had it running on dozens of machines, mate does not help towards a resolution. I am sure the DELL app developers have also had it running on dozens of machines but what was the underlying infrastructure configuration. Were they running it from an ISO or some other configuration.

Tell us more about the system config, especially the iso, is it burned to a DVD, or an you using a virtual media?  if you run the SUU locally on the system from a disc or directory, does it also fail? By chance have you disabled the 8.3 file names via a policy or registry entry?

    Hi Scott,

Nice to see this post. R u the same Scott that used to be at CBA?

Over the DRAC interface it seems to be potluck for SUU to work, using a virtual connection for the iso/dvd.

The only way i have managed to get updates to work in that situation is to visit the server.

But the above applies to my hardware M605, M905, R905 and 2970's

U could try updating from inside Windows.  Sometimes that succeeds when booting of the SUU CD does not.

    Cheers,

Didnt work for me. Same result.

When I click the "upgrade" button with only the NIC updates, I get the "Confirm Update" popup asking "Do you want to continue?" When I click "YES" nothing happens.

    Thanks,

Sorry to hear u r having so many problems Ryan.

I have done over 100 servers just recently, and they have all been fine, although with some I have had to resort to updating almost one component at a time.

    No idea why.

They have all worked eventually either booting from the DVD’s or from within Windows.

Hmmm, mine changes status to Udating or installing or something close to that.

OK, just try to update the BIOS only. Should be fairly quick if it's going to happen, <5mins, and it updates after it reboots.

Try this....From the GUI, just run the updates for the NICs.

Then see if they happen OK. Should take <15 mins.

Do NOT include DRAC, BMC or BIOS yet.

Let us know how that goes.

    Cheers,
