When the computer is started, it immediately starts sending through the wireless connection. The browser will not connect to any websites, and the email doesn't work. Other computers on the same DSL also will not connect. Apparently this thing is so dead-set on sending what it's sending that it consumes all our band width.
A 1XConfig.exe process is running. I can disable the wireless connection, and other computers can then connect, and the 1XConfig.exe process stops. I can enable the wireless, and 1XConfig.exe starts again, and it starts sending.
Norton Internet Security is installed and up-to-date. A scan of the system finds Backdoor.Trojan and says it's "partially resolved." Multiple scans have yielded the same results.
Is there a way to determine what it's sending? Is there a virus removal tool that could be downloaded on another computer and run on the Latitude without an Internet connection?
I was hoping for a method of scanning it that doesn't require Internet access. One suggestion I've had is to mount the laptop drive in an enclosure and scan it with the other computer. I'll try that this weekend.
Well, I guess the problem is solved. I'd scanned the drive repeatedly with Norton, which found a trojan but only partially removed it. I downloaded Spy Sweeper and scanned the drive, and while Spy Sweeper was scanning, Norton popped a message that it'd found a trojan. Then a few minutes later, while Spy Sweeper was still scanning, Norton popped another message that it'd removed a trojan.
Then Spy Sweeper found another one, which I quarantined and removed.
Both are scanning clean now, and the machine is acting normally.
The computer seems to be acting fine with both Norton and Spy Sweeper on it, so we're gonna try that for a while.
